Where the Tide Meets the Skin

Sourced from the World's Most Extraordinary Tidal Ecosystem. Every drop of sea kelp in every Nova Scotia Fisherman formula comes from the same place - the cold, wild waters of the Bay of Fundy. This is the story of where it comes from, who harvests it, and why it cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth

What Is Sea Kelp?

Sea kelp, known botanically as Fucus vesiculosus and commonly called bladderwrack, is a brown marine algae that grows along cold, rocky coastlines in the North Atlantic. It is one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the natural world, drawing minerals, vitamins, and bioactive compounds directly from the seawater it grows in

Unlike many botanical ingredients that are cultivated on land, sea kelp is a genuinely wild ingredient. It grows in tidal zones, exposed to salt, cold, and the relentless movement of ocean water, conditions that drive the plant to develop a remarkable concentration of protective compounds. Those compounds, it turns out, are highly compatible with human skin

Sea kelp has been used in coastal communities for centuries as food, as medicine, as fertiliser. In modern cosmetic formulation, it has earned its place through a growing body of research into its skin-conditioning properties, particularly around hydration and barrier support

Why Atlantic Sea Kelp, and Why Nova Scotia

Not all sea kelp is equal. The quality and potency of kelp as a skincare ingredient is directly tied to the health of the marine ecosystem it comes from. Our kelp is harvested from the waters off Nova Scotia, in the Bay of Fundy — an environment unlike almost any other on Earth.

The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides in the world. Twice each day, roughly 160 billion tonnes of cold, mineral-rich seawater surge through the bay and back out again. This extraordinary tidal movement keeps the water oxygenated and nutrient-dense, creating conditions where marine life — including sea kelp — thrives at exceptional levels of vitality.

Kelp that grows in this environment absorbs those minerals and bioactive compounds throughout its life cycle. When we harvest it and infuse it into our formulas, we are capturing something that genuinely reflects the richness of its source. This is not an ingredient flown in from a laboratory catalogue. It is a wild plant from one of the most ecologically productive coastal ecosystems on the Atlantic seaboard — harvested by people in our community who know these waters.

We source sustainably, working with local harvesters who practice responsible hand-harvesting techniques that protect the kelp beds and the broader marine ecosystem. [Learn more about our harvesting practices →]

The Science Behind Sea Kelp

Sea kelp's value in skincare is not anecdotal. It is backed by a growing body of cosmetic science research, centred on several key compounds that the plant produces naturally.

Fucoidan

Fucoidan is a sulphated polysaccharide found almost exclusively in brown marine algae — including Fucus vesiculosus. It has been studied extensively for its moisturizing and skin-conditioning properties. In cosmetic formulations, fucoidan helps attract and retain moisture at the skin surface, supporting the skin's natural hydration function. Research has also explored its interaction with the skin's own structural proteins, with results suggesting it plays a role in conditioning and supporting skin texture over time

Minerals and Trace Elements

Sea kelp naturally concentrates minerals from its marine environment, including iodine, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. These trace elements are present in the skin's natural composition and play supportive roles in maintaining healthy skin function. Topically applied, they contribute to a mineral-rich environment that complements the skin's own chemistry

Vitamins and Antioxidants

Atlantic sea kelp is a natural source of B-vitamins and Vitamin C, as well as antioxidant compounds that help protect the plant against oxidative stress in its marine environment. These same antioxidant properties are of interest in cosmetic formulation for their skin-conditioning potential

How Sea Kelp Works With Your Skin

In a well-formulated skincare product, sea kelp extract functions primarily as a humectant and conditioning agent. A humectant draws moisture toward the skin — helping the outer layers stay hydrated rather than losing water to the air. Sea kelp's fucoidan content is understood to support this function, making it particularly effective in cold, dry climates where transepidermal water loss is a persistent challenge.

Beyond hydration, sea kelp has a naturally soothing character that makes it well-suited to sensitive or reactive skin. Its mineral content complements the skin's own environment rather than disrupting it, and its antioxidant compounds help condition the skin over time.

This is why sea kelp performs especially well in formulas designed for weathered, hard-working skin — the kind of skin that faces cold wind, salt air, and physical labour. It was exactly this need that inspired Nova Scotia Fisherman's founders to build a brand around it. The original formulas were made for fishers on the Atlantic coast. That same logic applies to anyone whose skin faces daily stress from environment, climate, or routine.

How We Use Sea Kelp

At Nova Scotia Fisherman, sea kelp is not a token ingredient added for label appeal. It is the foundational active in every formula we make — present in meaningful concentrations alongside the natural carrier oils, botanical extracts, and skin-conditioning actives that make up our full product line

Our sea kelp is sourced as a certified organic extract and incorporated into each formula during production at our facility in New Minas, Nova Scotia. Because we make everything in small batches, we control exactly how the extract is handled and at what stage it enters the formula — a level of care that is not possible at commercial scale

You will find sea kelp at the core of our body moisturizers, cold-process bar soaps, Deck Hands hand cream, Rescue Balm, and facial care line. Whether you are reaching for a daily moisturizer, a hand cream for rough winter skin, or a nourishing facial serum, sea kelp is the thread that connects them

Every ingredient list on every product page shows exactly where sea kelp appears — we list ingredients using INCI names, with certified organic ingredients marked with an asterisk
