Every NOVA SCOTIA FISHERMAN skin & body care product is built on one wild, remarkable ingredient, ATLANTIC SEA KELP, harvested from the cold, tidal waters of Nova Scotia's Southern shores. Here is what it is, why it works, and why where it comes from matters..
NOVA SCOTIA SEA KELP, known botanically as Fucus vesiculosus, is a brown marine algae that grows along cold, rocky coastlines in the North Atlantic. It is one of the most nutrient-dense plants in the natural world, drawing minerals, vitamins, and bioactive compounds directly from the seawater it grows in
Unlike many botanical ingredients that are cultivated on land, sea kelp is a genuinely wild ingredient. It grows in tidal zones, exposed to salt, cold, and the relentless movement of ocean water, conditions that drive the plant to develop a remarkable concentration of protective compounds. Those compounds, it turns out, are highly compatible with human skin
Sea kelp has been used in coastal communities for centuries as food, as medicine, in farming. In modern cosmetic formulation, it has earned its place through a growing body of research into its skin-conditioning properties, particularly around hydration and barrier support
Sea kelp's value in skincare is backed by a growing body of cosmetic science research, centred on several key compounds that the plant produces naturally
Fucoidan is a sulphated polysaccharide found almost exclusively in brown marine algae, including Nova Scotia Sea Kelp (Fucus vesiculosus). It has been studied extensively for its moisturizing and skin-conditioning properties. In skin care formulations, fucoidan helps attract and retain moisture at the skin surface, supporting the skin's natural hydration function. Research has also explored its interaction with the skin's own structural proteins, with results suggesting it plays a role in conditioning and supporting skin texture over time
Sea kelp naturally concentrates minerals from its marine environment, including iodine, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. These trace elements are present in the skin's natural composition and play supportive roles in maintaining healthy skin function. Topically applied, they contribute to a mineral-rich environment that complements the skin's own chemistry
Nova Scotia sea kelp is a natural source of B-vitamins and Vitamin C, as well as antioxidant compounds that help protect the plant against oxidative stress in its marine environment. These same antioxidant properties are of interest in cosmetic formulation for their skin-conditioning benefits

The quality and potency of kelp as a skincare ingredient is directly tied to the health of the marine ecosystem it comes from. Our kelp is hand-harvested from the cold waters off the Southern coast of Nova Scotia, transported to the Bay of Fundy, an environment unlike almost any other on Earth
The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides in the world. Twice each day, roughly 160 billion tonnes of cold, mineral-rich seawater surge passed the Southern coast, through the bay and back out again. This extraordinary tidal movement keeps the water oxygenated and nutrient-dense, creating conditions where marine life, including sea kelp, thrives at exceptional levels of vitality
Kelp that grows in this environment absorbs those minerals and bioactive compounds throughout its life cycle. The kelp is hand-harvested, sun-dried, and infused into our formulas, capturing something that genuinely reflects the richness of its source. It is a wild plant from one of the most ecologically productive coastal ecosystems on the Atlantic seaboard, harvested by those in our communities who know these waters (Fisherman)
We source sustainably, working with local Fisherman harvesters who practice responsible hand-harvesting techniques that protect the kelp beds and the broader marine ecosystem [Learn more about our harvesting practices →]
Sea kelp applied topically functions primarily as a humectant and conditioning agent. A humectant draws moisture toward the skin, helping the outer layers stay hydrated rather than losing water to the air. Sea kelp's Fucoidan content is understood to support this function, making it particularly effective in colder, changing climates where transepidermal water loss is a persistent challenge
Beyond hydration, sea kelp has a naturally soothing character that makes it well-suited to sensitive or reactive skin. Its mineral content complements the skin's own environment rather than disrupting it, and its antioxidant compounds help condition the skin over time
This is why sea kelp performs especially well in formulas designed for weathered, hard-working skin, the kind of skin that faces cold wind, salt air, and the external environment. It was exactly this need that inspired Nova Scotia Fisherman
You will find kelp in all of our Skin & Body care products. Our sea kelp is sourced as a certified organic extract and incorporated into each formula. Because we make everything in small batches, we control exactly how the extract is handled and at what stage it enters the formula, reducing heat exposure and retaining nutrient density. The kelp is dried using sun and oxygen. Then it is processed into a powder, which we infuse with organic oils, natural botanicals, and vitamins
The process of creating a "Broth" or "Marine Layer" is used in luxury skin care, and we follow a similar process of extraction, but also commitment to retaining nutrient profile
