This summer is going to be different in how we interact, where we go, and also in the principles for keeping our skin healthy. Apart from the obvious (excessive hand washing), we are also dealing with changing climates and a challenging summer vacation schedule that’s forcing some of us to get outside in our own back yards (not so terrible). The outdoor environment can be challenging to navigate in terms of keeping our skin healthy, vibrant, and these challenges can be harder to overcome (and expensive) for those with senstitivities.
Nature typically gives back to us, and offers many natural remedies for our skin, we just need to learn how to use them. Let’s break it down and cover simple ways to help keep your skin looking / feeling healthy during summer without using overpriced, overcomplicated solutions:
Cleanse, Exfoliate, Moisturize. Our skin is an organ, and therefore is constantly shifting, growing, and trying to adapt to it’s environment, but it just like any other organ, it requires certain conditions of care to stay healthy.
Being outdoors during the summer months our skin is exposed to dirt and bacteria that can clog our pores + humid air that causes sweat secretion. All of this adds up to a higher level of dirt on the surface of the skin that seeps into pores. What dirt isn’t absorbed by our bodies through our skin, sits in our pores and can cause redness, breakouts, acne, and irritation. Then add in the heavy pore-clogging sunscreens and bug repellant, being applied all day.
So what’s the simple process to prevent this irritation?
We want to remove dirt and bacteria from the surface of the skin by using soap. High lathering soaps help remove bacteria and dirt through surfactants (Natural oils ability to make a surface slippery). This helps lift and wash away dirt with minimal effort. Look for natural soap bars or natural liquid soap, as generic body washes are typically full of synthetics, chemicals, and additives that aren’t safe for the body and become absorbed through the skin over time.
Sometimes cleansing just isn’t enough. That dirt or sunscreen can seep it’s way into the skins pores and clog them, preventing the pores from naturally breathing, which can lead to all kinds of irritation, as well as pre-mature aging. Using a light scrub, or soap bar with natural exfoliating properties (like with sea salt, sugar, or charcoal) a few times per week can help remove the excess dirt and clean out the pores, allowing them to breath. Exfoliation also helps with prevention of more chronic conditions like ezcema, rosacea, and acne that can be exacerbated by sweat, and other bacteria filling pores. Just as over-cleansing can dry skin out, over exfoliating can leaving skin feeling raw and irritated. It’s best to look for a natural exfoliant (mild acidic agent, salt, sugar, or charcoal), and avoid products with pore-removing chemicals or additives, unless prescribed by a dermatologist.
Not only is moisturizing your skin a good idea daily, it’s impact increases whenever the skin is under stress. Big days in the sun, or out in humid weather can dry out the skin fast. Dry skin leads to pre-mature aging and other conditions like dry spots, flaking, and discolouration. When you’re in the sun or sweating, our skin is working to allow water and oxygen to pass through. As our skins nutrients depletes, we need to restore these nutrients in order to bring it back to a healthy equilibrium. Same rules apply as soap, look for a moisturizer that is natural without added chemicals, apply liberally after sun exposure, and add it to a daily routine, especially for locations that are exposed to the air often (face, hands, etc.).
There are many more factors to consider in skincare, but building strong, healthy skin naturally comes down to simple habits you can make a routine. Choose clean products, rinse and repeat.
If you’ve spent a summer in Canada, then you’ve spent a summer with Bugs. Unfortunately for most of our planet, where you find wilderness, peace, and solitude, you’ll also find these important parts of our environment and ecosystems. So, co-existing with these little guys means we have to adapt.
A lot of the success in repelling bugs comes down to scent. They are attracted to our bodies natural scent, as well as those from many of the popular artificial products consumers use. If you’ve ever entered the woods after shampooing your hair, or been the target of moistquitos at a back yard BBQ, you understand. And the problem with most bug sprays & creams is that they break the basic rules - They cover the skin, they can clog pores, they’re made with chemicals and synthetic additives, and many can dry out the skin if not washed away properly.
However, natural essential oils can help and are a great all-natural option that’s been used for centuries (rubbings flowers in the napes of necks). They can be infused into other skincare products (so you’re applying them already, incase you are one to forget bug-repellant), and are generally safer for sensitive skin. These are natural oils and are free of synthetic chemical properties found in many popular bug sprays. Because they are distilled, you only need a few drops, or look for natural skincare products containing / infused with specific essential oils bugs hate.
Some natural scents that bugs hate (in order of effectiveness):
Cedarwood
Lavender
Peppermint
Citronella
Lemongrass
Sweet Orange
Sea Buckthorn
Lemon Eucalyptus
Cinnamon
If you’re heading out into the sun for any length of time uncovered, you’re going to want sunscreen. There’s no questioning the benefit and necessity of sunscreen, and applying it liberally when necessary. Although there are some great natural alternatives, most major sunscreens are thick creams with synthetic blockers. They’re effective but can be harsh on the skin over time. Just be sure to rinse off after a big day out and exfoliate to remove excess sunscreen from your pores.
Almost as important as blocking the suns rays, is aftercare. Proper moisturizing after a sunny day can help reduce inflammation, healing time, redness, and further damage by cooling the skins surface. Same rules apply here for sourcing, stick with natural. Especially important when considering a moisturizer, as your skin is going to absorb the oils through the skins surface. Also look for a moisturizer with an added anti-inflammatory like Aloe. Sea Kelp and Seaweed has been used for centuries as a natural aftersun for its high anti-inflammatory effect. Kelp contains so many important minerals and vitamins for replenishing the skins moisture levels, allowing it to heal faster, and prevent drying out damage.
Stick to these simple tips and your skin will thank you. Consistency is key, and buying natural products does go a long way for maintaining our skins health.

The key to healthy skin is to find a routine and products that are simple and work, and that shouldn’t be at the expense of their health by adding in chemical ingredients they don’t need. Simple, natural, effective. Rinse and repeat.

This year more than ever, Dad’s hands are taking abuse from over cleansing, and drying-out from sanitizing. Although Dads are usually the ones who need to be paying extra care to their hands, they are often left neglected.
The key to healthy skin is to find a routine + products that are simple and work. This shouldn’t be at the expense of adding in chemical ingredients they don’t need. Simple, natural, effective. Rinse and repeat.
1) Cleanser for Daily Use:
Hands get dirty. We know that now more than ever. And although removing germs and bacteria is why we wash, we don’t want to do harm during the process.
Cheap liquid soaps can be handy (get it), but they’re often filled with cheap synthetic chemicals for creating lather and removing germs.. These can dry out the skin, making dry hands much worse, and the harmful ingredients become absorbed into the skin.
Get yourself a good-old fashioned natural soap bar and nourish skin while you wash. Natural soaps are great for removing germs because of their rich lather and surfactant level. And natural oils help nourish and repair the skin, while lifting and removing bacteria.
Our best-selling soap bar full of nourishing natural ingredients, including soothing mint, Atlantic sea kelp, and caolin clay. Natural bar soap desecrates germs while repairing dry skin with natural oils. Our soap bars are safe for hands, body, face and hair. Hand made in Nova Scotia near the Bay of Fundy.
2) Daily Hand Cream:
Just as removing bacteria is important, so is keeping our skin healthy. Washing repeatedly will eventually cause the skin to dry out as the natural oils are removed. Use a natural moisturizer or hand cream to replenish skin and bring back it back to equilibrium. Same rules apply here, cheaper/synethic options will have many chemicals and fillers, stick to natural.
Hard working hands needs a hard working cream. Deck Hands is our most moisturizing formula for repairing and protecting dry hands. Works instantly, dries fast, and smells great. Made with Atlantic sea kelp, cacao, aloe, rich organic shea. Scented ocean fresh with grapefruit, lemongrass, patchouli, and cedarwood.
3) Natural Repair Balm:
Calluses, blisters, cuts, scrapes, burns, bites.. these things happen. But a small problem neglected can become a larger one, taking time to heal. Natural balms are great because they’re ultra-moisturizing and multi-use. If it’s natural, it can be used as a topical on irritated areas, but also as a moisturizer on very dry patches of skin. Great for those with skin conditions and irritation.
Rescue Balm is our fix-it-all natural formula made with powerful Nova Scotia sea kelp. Hydrating balm for use on dry skin, cuts, scrapes, scratches, burns, and everything in between. Healing for those with conditions, all natural and safe for all skin types. Great for Dad to have in the car, at home, and on the go.
4) Cleanser for Very Dry Hands:
For those with hard working hands, or hobbies that leave our hands worn and dry (think hiking, fishing, camping, biking, surfing, etc), daily soap may not cut it. Look for natural soap bars with added moisturizing properties and vitamin e. This can help speed up the healing process while you cleanse, and return hands to a healthy centre.
For those with skin conditions, or working hands that need serious moisture repair, this soap bar is infused with our powerful Rescue Balm formula. Use as a daily hand cleanser and see results fast from powerful, healing Nova Scotia sea kelp.
5) Cuticle Care:
Neglected for many, our cuticle health can impact our bodies exposure to bacteria and the protection of healthy nail growth. The area can get dry, damaged, and infected, especially when using your hands is a daily occurrence. It's important to care for the entire nail area and keep it clean so that your nails stay healthy, prevents pain and helps decrease chance of infection.
Repair hangnails, cuts, scrapes, and inflammation with our Cuticle Rescue formula. Made with vitamin c + collagen rich sea buckthorn oil, castor oil, coconut oil, Atlantic sea kelp, and vitamin e. Easy to fit in a pocket or bag.
Bonus 6) For The Outdoorsman:
Being outdoors means Dad’s lips are going to be exposed to the elements. Wind, humidity, sun can all dry out lips fast. When choosing a lip balm, look for a balm made with Natural Beeswax. Beeswax is nature’s best natural method to help lock in moisture, while also creating a barrier against the external environment. Any additional nutrients for healing and vitamin e are important.
Our lip balms are made to lock in moisture, and create a barrier from the outside elements. So whether you’re at home, or out on the boat, camping, running trails, or fishing, our lip balms work fast. Made with organic, natural beeswax, organic shea butter, and skin-repairing vitamin e.
Bonus 7) For Moustache, Beard, or Stubble:
Beards are great, if managed. While oils can help soften facial hairs, balms offer a 3 in 1 use and more bang for your buck. Natural beard balms are made from hydrating oils and wax (beeswax), meaning they hydrate, de-odourize AND offer a bit of styling / shaping. Get one in an applicator stick for mess-free application on the go.
Moisturize, de-odourize, and style with our natural Beard Balm. Apply after a shower, or for a quick refresh on the go. All natural and made with certified organic oils. Fresh scents of citrus, mint, or musk.
For the Really Good Dad:
Our Father's Day gift set has everything Dad needs to wash away germs, repair dry hands, dry lips, and protect against the elements.
Hiking, yard work, boating, biking, camping.. this set will have him covered. Made with soothing, natural scents from the east coast and infused with powerful Nova Scotia sea kelp.

To Dad’s Everywhere, Thank you!

- Extremely dry skin
- Cracked, cut, and scabbed skin
- Calluses
- Conditions such as: Eczema, Psoriasis & Rosacea
Our original “fix it all” balm formula is a true natural powerhouse for repairing all skin types. Made by hand in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, the balm formula is created using an organic base of coconut, olive, castor, and jojoba oils. We then blend the oils with rich, hydrating shea, sustainably-sourced Nova Scotian beeswax, rosehip, aloe plant extract and vitamin e for natural healing properties.
Brown sea kelp grown along the coast of southern Nova Scotia are shown to act as anti-aging agents, improving skin elasticity and softness. Nutrient rich, Nova Scotia kelp is a natural source of magnesium, protein, fucoidan, retinol, and vitamin a. Our kelp is harvested by hand, unprocessed and raw to retain all of the healing benefits for our skin. Leaving the kelp unprocessed is where the bright, rich green colour of the balm comes from.
We use a blend of natural essential oils to create a unique scent that is fresh and calming. Chamomile, lavender, geranium, tea tree, and rosemary.
Why do we use scent? Aroma through natural fragrance can be therapeutic and aid in reducing stress. As powerful and nurturing sea kelp can be for your skin, in its raw state it is salty & briny, just like the Atlantic. Blending the raw sea kelp with essential oils helps mask the ocean scent, leaving your skin smelling fresh, and reducing stress at the same time.

- Lips
- Hands
- Feet

- Cuts
- Wounds
- Calluses
- Dry patches / Flare ups
1) Clean the application area (especially if applying to a scab, wound, cut, or callus)
2) The quantity of product used will depend on the skin issue. For general dry skin and reducing inflammation, you’ll want to apply light and make sure the product is absorbed fully by the skin. This typically occurs when the colour of the balm can no longer be recognized.
3) Observe the treated area and re-apply liberally
4) Store in a dry, cool place. If on the go, a bag or backpack removed from direct sunlight or severe heat is recommended
5) Use soap and water to rinse out the tin and recycle or repurpose

Exfoliation - Exfoliation is the process of removing these dead skin cells from pores, while nourishing the skin to repair moisture levels and prevent redness.
Moisturize (with a heavier cream) - Just as important as removing excess skin cells and bacteria from pores, is how we nourish our skin to bring it back to a healthy balance. Because skin is so deprived of moisture during the cold months, it’s important to switch to a heavier moisturizer with a nourishing base, like organic shea.
Winter is a tough time for our skin. If you live in a cold climate, it can have an even larger impact on the feel, look, elasticity, and health. Exposed areas of skin can become dried out, flake, crack, turn red from inflammation and even cause break-outs.
During the colder months, the air dries out. The colder air contains less humidity which speeds up the drying out process of our skin. Areas exposed to the open air are at a higher risk, but colder temps impact the skin on our whole body.
As skin becomes dry and brittle, it begins to flake. These flakes of dead skin cells can accumulate on the skin’s surface, clogging pores and keeping dirt underneath. With a limited ability to cleanse and breath, inflammation and acne can form in many places, even if unnatural for a skin type.
Increase frequency of care - Just as important as doing the right things to help your skin during winter, it’s also important to take care more frequently. A general rule is to Exfoliate 2-3 times per week, and to moisturize twice daily. It’s also a good idea to keep moisturizer with you during the day to apply to exposed areas (hands, face, lips, etc.). Using a thicker, natural moisturizer will help repair damaged skin, but also protect against further damage.
Does everyone need to exfoliate during winter? The short answer is yes. Even sensitive skin types will want to incorporate gentle exfoliation into their regular routine, especially on areas that appear dried out.
Step one: Identify trouble areas - Locate areas of skin that seem to dry out the fastest. For some this can be hands, for others it’s feet, heels, neck, and face. These areas are going to need more focus during exfoliation sessions, and more attention with moisturizing.
Step two: Test your exfoliator - Because there are many different skin types, each can react differently to exfoliator severity. In all circumstances its best practice to start with a small portion of product, and increase as you feel necessary. Some areas like feet or hands, may require a more dense exfoliator with sea salt, and for full body you may want a more mild exfoliant, like charcoal soap. For those with sensitive skin, you can mix the exfoliator with water to dilute the grain level.
Step three: Scrub, rinse, and repeat - For areas that are very dry, you want to spend time scrubbing the exfoliator into the skin and allowing the oils to heal and nourish. Feet and hands may require more time than face or body, as these areas tend to take the most abuse from the elements.
Step four: Nourish and Moisturize - Once exfoliation has occurred, you want to nourish and replace the oils that have been stripped from the skins surface. After a bath or shower, apply a full body moisturizer to re-balance the skin and maintain elasticity. This will also help keep the skin in a healthy, resilient state. The more you moisturize, the less issues you should see when the air becomes dry.
Step five: Keep it natural and find the right products for you - As a general rule, natural products without added chemicals are best for your skins health.
Sea Kelp Soaps (Natural Body Wash)
As our worlds become more complicated, and our environments become more urban, aroma can take our minds and body’s to a new state of relaxation. In fact, using scent in different ways can have a profound effect on your mind and body, thanks to a complex system of nerves in your brain called the limbic system.
Our limbic system affects our emotions, memory, learning, appetite, and hormones. Breathing or smelling essential oils can help stimulate different bodily responses, such as breathing patterns, blood pressure, and heart rate.
We know it’s not always easy to carry bottles of essential oils around with you (or affordable), which is why we’ve infused our products to carry these scents with you on your skin, and experience the benefits while in your most intimate moments of cleansing and care.
As a natural products producer, our customers care about what’s in our products and the quality of ingredients coming into contact with their skin. At the same time, we wanted to continue to infuse our formulas with powerful sea kelp extract. Our kelp extract is raw, unprocessed and packed full of nutrients as it’s infused into our products. Being untreated to maintain nutritional content, it carries a distinctive scent of dulse, salt water, umami.
To mask the natural scent from the kelp, we chose scents that were subtle, natural and fit into categories of helping our bodies deal with daily stressors.
The essential oils we use in our products are powerful and need to be diluted before use. This is why they are combined with carrier oils such as avocado oil, castor oil, coconut oil, and olive oil.
This dilution increases the surface area where the essential oil can be absorbed and lowers the risk of experiencing any skin sensitivity issues.
Soothing;
Eucalyptus, Mint, Chamomile, Spearmint
These scents are herbal, grounding, fresh and cooling. They smell great on skin, and activate when in hot water under a shower or bath.
Energizing:
Orange / Citrus, Seabuckthorn, Lemon
Great in the morning, these scents are bright, punchy, and fresh. They energize the skin and invigorate the mind. They also layer quite well with more grounded, musky scents and provide a nice, subtle, long lasting skin scent.
Calming:
Lavender, Mint, Chamomile
When anxiety hits, the mind needs to simplify and calm. Lavender and Mint are both known to relax the mind and provide peace. They have a very subtle on-skin scent, but during a bath or shower they come alive.
1. Think of how aroma can be incorporated into your life. For many of us, taking time for sniffing essentials can be tough, but we all cleanse ourselves! Skincare and cleansing can be a great opportunity to incorporate this form of therapy into your day to day.
2. You want to look for products that posses these natural scents, natural formulas, and avoid heavy synthetics. Many artificial scents can have the opposite effect on your body and mind, causing irritation and headaches.
3. Be conscious of your body and it’s stressors. Use aroma as a powerful additive to your de-stressing practices like exercise, getting outside, yoga, meditation, etc. Trust in the science. Even if it feels strange.
Some potential healing benefits of Aromatherapy:
Reduce Stress
Relieve Anxiety
Boost Energy
Improve Focus
Reduce Physical Pain
Improve Sleep
Aid in Digestion
Balance hormone levels & Immune System
Skincare for men can vary. In most cases, men want products that are simple, clean, and just work. No mess, no fuss, and no instructions. Here are 5 must-have products that will keep every mans skin nourished and smelling great:
Men get dirty. It’s science. And dirty skin = aging skin. Most men’s body wash that you’ll find in stores are full of synthetic fillers, chemicals, and detergents. This not only dries out the skin, but it’s absorbed by the pores and by the drain. Stick to a body wash / soap that is all natural and made with a nourishing oil base.
We recommend: Beer Bar - This premium bar is made with a natural blend of organic shea butter, castor, coconut+ olive oils, and vitamin e. Each bar is then infused with grapefruit craft beer and sea kelp from the shores of Nova Scotia. One bar is safe for hands, face, body, or hair. Fresh & masculine scent of spearmint, grapefruit, lavender and black pepper.
Strong skin is healthy skin. Moisturizing the skin is important to fight aging, keep appearing healthy and feeling nourished. Since moisturizers are absorbed through the pores of your skin, you want to find a natural lotion or cream that is free from synthetics and artifcial fillers. It’s also important to find a moisturizer that is balanced, meaning it’s quick drying while providing enough nourishment.
We recommend: Original Sea Kelp Moisturizer - Our original moisturizing formula shares many properties with natural moisturizers 2, 4, even 8 times it’s price in value. Made with sea kelp extract, this face + body lotion is all natural, quick drying, vegan friendly, and a very subtle fresh scent. Use twice daily for best results.
Mens hands are notoriously dry and neglected. But finding a natural hand cream that is built strong can be difficult. Look for a cream that is shea-based and quick drying. Find a container that is sturdy and airline safe, so you can take it on the go. You also want to find a natural, multi-purpose balm for when your skin really needs repair. A natural balm can be a moisturizer, anti-septic, lip balm, or healing ointment all in one.
We recommend: Deck Hands Sea Kelp Hand Cream + Rescue Balm - Deck Hands is our new moisturizing cream formulated for dry, hard working hands. Made with organic shea butter, it’s our most nourishing formula and dries fast. Fresh citrus scent of bergamot, patchouli, and lemongrass. Rescue Balm comes in a re-usable tin, or an easy-apply stick for on the go.
Lips are exposed to the air 24/7, and prevention is just as important as treatment when it comes to keeping them healthy. Look for a balm with natural beeswax, which creates a natural barrier to protect against the environment while locking in moisture. Vitamin e will help heal cracks, sores, and dry spots.
We recommend: Fishermint Sea Kelp Lip Balm - Organic beeswax, sea kelp, coconut oil, fresh mint leaves, peppermint oil, eucalyptus. This balm cools the lips, nourishes, and protects against dry air.
Facial hair can be difficult to tame. A natural balm that moisturizes, softens, and de-odorizes can make a big difference. Look for an all purpose beard balm that can be applied to beard, moustache, eyebrows, and even hair. For best results apply when wet after a shower.
We recommend: Beard Balm - We made our beard balm with the above in mind, a multi-use all natural balm that could be used for anything. We use fresh and masculine natural scents like lemon, peppermint, ginger, and spice. Comes in an easy apply stick for no mess application on the go.
Here are some little tips that can have big impacts on your skin’s appearance, vibrancy, and strength during fall:
Fall is here, and it is beautiful. With the beauty of orange, red, and yellow leaves comes colder temps and drier air. Our skin is dealing with these changes during this time and it’s important to adjust our routines to help keep our skin healthy and happy during the colder months.
Here are some little tips that can have big impacts on your skin’s appearance, vibrancy, and strength during fall:
As the air becomes cooler and dry (loosing humidity), you want to be using a thicker moisturizer. For best results, look for all natural moisturizers with a cream-like base. Many will be made with shea, or a natural oil blend. “We need to compensate for the environmental change by adding moire moisture to the skin and helping to retain it” Julia Tzu, MD, board-certified dermatologist
Thicker moisturizers create a strong barrier, meaning they reduce water loss from the skin, while also providing and locking in hydration from the natural oils. Look for a moisturizer with a high vitamin c content (like seabuckthorn). “Vitamin C evens skin pigmentation in colder months, which helps to boost collagen production resulting in a brighter, warmer complexion” Anne Chapas, MD, board-certified dermatologist
During the summer months when humidity is high, sweating is more common, and SPF is applied, your pores can become full, requiring exfoliation. During the cooler fall and winter months, your skin is receiving less exposure to sun, heat, and oils, which tends to leave it feeling dry.
Cut back on exfoliation during these months for best results. Switching to a bar soap infused with charcoal or sea salt can be an effective way to gently exfoliate, without irritating the skin.
Start moisturizing lips in the fall to help prevent cracking and drying out during the cold winter months. Your lips are exposed to the cool fall air daily! Make sure you’re protecting with a natural beeswax balm, avoiding petroleum protects for best results. Beeswax creates a strong barrier that locks-in moisture, helps heal dry areas, and protects against the external environment.
Brown sea kelp is a natural anti-inflammatory, which can help sooth dry spots and nourish the skin with its high mineral content. Adding a natural moisturizer with kelp around the eyes can help nourish the skin and appear tighter, reducing the impact from wrinkles and aging.
Fragrant, soapy body washes might feel (and smell) great, but these are essentially detergents that leave your skin dry. Especially when Fall arrives, make the switch to a natural hydrating cleanser. Stick to natural body wash’s or soap bars with hydrating oils, and not synthetic cleansers.
Make the switch can also help reduce your environmental footprint by reducing plastic consumption. Natural body wash bars can double as facial cleansers, body wash, hand wash, and even natural shampoo, reducing your plastic use even further.
Hands are exposed to the cold a lot during the fall and winter months. Prevention is the key here to keeping your hands looking and feeling healthy when the air is dry and cold.
Find a moisturizer with advanced moisture AND healing properties (like sea kelp). You should look for a non-greasy, shea based lotion that is portable so that you will remember to carry it with you, where you need it, when you need it.

Our name Nova Scotia Fisherman references two themes in Atlantic Canada - resiliency of our hard-working maritime fishing community, and the rich, powerful content of our cold Atlantic waters.
This September, our team attended the annual CHFA (Canadian Health Food Association) conference in Toronto, Ontario. This annual event is an amazing opportunity to share our story, our natural products from Atlantic Canada, and share the stage with like-minded natural brands from all over Canada.
At this year’s trade show, we debuted our “Quit The Bottle” campaign (read more here), new plastic-free body wash bars (Shop now), and made some new product announcements coming very soon!
Our new campaign is to encourage the consciousness of our decisions as consumers, encouraging us to take small steps to reduce our footprint and make better decisions for the planet. What easier way to start than to swap synthetic detergents and body washes for natural bar soap. Cleanse and moisturize naturally, without parabens, synthetics, additives, or gluten, and skip the plastic bottles.
Each bar is multi-use and safe as a body wash, facial cleanser, hand soap, or shampoo. They’re even great solutions for cleaning our furry pet pals. Long lasting, quick lather, and vegan friendly!

We also work with many independent shops across Canada who do amazing work. We want to thank them for their support and dedication to their communities. We want to give our customers the option to support their local business owners, and still have access to natural products at an affordable price point. These wonderful businesses give us that opportunity and we thank them!
We must also give a big thank you to National Nutrition, for awarding us 2019’s Best Lip / Mouth Care for our original sea kelp lip balm (Shop now).
Our original lip balm was one of the first all natural formulas for our company, and has been a best-seller ever since, mainly due to its instant moisturizing properties and anti-inflammatory benefits. We also use sustainably-sourced, untreated, organic beeswax that helps create a barrier from the environment, preventing chapping from cold winds, dry airs, or anything nature will throw your way.
It’s an honour to be recognized for the natural formulas of our products, as it’s an important foundation for our company values. We believe the best and most effective products, can also be some of the cleanest and most natural. Let nature do the work, and our skin reap the powerful benefits!

]]>Today, we know that plastics, when not recycled or re-used, are filling our landfills, our oceans, and our neighbourhoods.
It is a growing issue, one in which we all contribute, or have contributed to. And as we move forward as a society to make better decisions for our health, our families health, and the health of our environment, small choices can make large impacts in helping build conscientiousness and better habits.
As a small company situated so close to the ocean, our environment and its health, is not only important to our communities and ecosystems but also to the quality of ingredients in our products and the marine life with which it shares home.
Over the past year, we have taken steps to reduce our footprint in manufacturing, corporate energy consumption, and vesting more time in consumer recycling eduction.
Some other choices we make as a company to make clean & natural products, reduce our footprint, and support a healthy environment:
- Sourcing ingredients, packaging, and materials locally
- Sourcing 100% organic ingredients whenever possible
- Testing on happy humans, never on animals
- Avoid all artificial preservatives
- No artificial colours, fragrance, or fillers
- Source organic, raw, & sustainable sea kelp from the shores of Nova Scotia
- Support & employ local farmers, harvesters, labourers, and artisans
- Monetary & branding support for the Nature Conservancy of Canada
And although we are making better decisions, even as a small company, there is always room to do more.
Moving into 2020, our next mission is in packaging - Reducing the footprint of our own product packaging, and educating consumers on the benefits of being mindful of their own choices.
Changing packaging is an expensive endeavour for a small business, however we believe in the pursuit and will immediately take steps to reach our goal.
This week we’re announcing our first major step by eliminating all plastics from our natural bar soaps. By moving to compostable, recyclable, boxes, our soap bars become 100% natural and leave little-to-no negative footprint. We sourced boxes without small plastic liners, to ensure that no plastics were used, and that the packaging could be composted or recycled anywhere in North America.
In addition, we’re changing the name of our Full Size soap bars to Natural Body Wash. This decision is in support of our mission to encourage consumers to skip the use of plastic bottles and harsh detergents for natural bar body wash, shampoo, and hand soaps.
Consumer grade beauty and skin products come in thick plastic containers with high purchase frequency, and their formulas contain chemical preservatives, for colour, and fragrance. Not only is this bad for your skin to absorb, but also as it travels down our drains, our waterways, and ecosystems.
Switching even one of these products to our Natural Body Wash Bar can help decrease your footprint, but also bring better decisions top of mind.
Our Body Wash Bars are true multi-use. They can be used as a full body wash, facial cleanser, hand soap, or even shampoo. Many of our customers even use them to clean their pets! All of this coming from our conscious, responsible customers who constantly impress us with intuitive ways to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.
At Nova Scotia Fisherman, we have some of the most responsible, educated, conscientious, and caring customers in the health & beauty industry. As we like to engage, get feedback, and start conversations with our customers - we are listening and learning all the time.
Over the past several years, it’s become apparent to us that our customers passion for clean, sustainable, natural products is only growing. And we want to keep up and produce the best products we can.
We’re working on sourcing sustainable alternatives to our other packaging solutions as we speak. Being a small company, It is a costly endeavour but one we believe is important and will soon become essential for companies that want to sustain, grow, and build clean products for happy customers.
We will be keeping our community updated through our Newsletter. If you haven’t done so, please take a moment to Subscribe - You’ll receive news on clean beauty, our local climates, new natural skincare products, and promotions / sales.

As summer ends and we head into fall, it’s important to remind ourselves that the sun is still shining and can have serious impacts on our skin’s health, appearance, and aging.
We all know that limiting sun exposure and sun blocks (natural or lotions), can help reduce the impacts from the sun. But what’s just as important is the steps you take after you’ve been exposed to UV for long periods.
Taking care of your skin after excessive sun exposure is incredibly important. After sun, your skin is in a state of re-balancing and wants to be nourished to decrease the impact of drying out, free radical damage, and pre-mature aging.
This time is important, as you want to provide stability and nourish while this re-balancing period is occurring.
1. Gently Exfoliate, Cleanse, & Protect
2. Nourishment
3. Hydration
So let’s dive in and discuss how each can help prevent excess damage to your body’s largest organ (your skin)!
A day in the sun can involve sand, dirt, salt water, vegetation, sweat, oils, .. and on and on. This means step one is to gently cleanse the skin, remove unnecessary dirt from pores, allowing them to breath / absorb healthy minerals, and prevent breakouts.
A gentle and natural exfoliating soap or rub can achieve this without irritating burnt skin, or causing further harm. (See our Forest Charcoal Soap and Salt N Sea Scrub).
Once your skin and pores are clean, you want to nourish the skin and replenish hydration. After sun moisturizers come in all types and qualities. However, thicker, synthetic creams can actually trap heat under the surface, exacerbating any burns. Your skin will also easily absorb any synthetic colours, fragrance, or fillers during this period.
1. A formula containing high water and aloe content
Moisturizers with high water content (water base) and aloe plant typically are absorbed quickly without clogging pores. (See our original sea kelp moisturizer in a travel tube). Aloe helps sooth warm skin, while a water base allows the oils and nutrients to be absorbed quickly.
2. Moisturizer, or after-sun formula containing anti-inflammatory properties (like nutrient-rich, brown ocean kelp)
Reducing damage can extend to preventing issues like skin-damaging free radicals, redness, and general inflammation from heat exposure. Using a moisturizer with a natural anti-inflammatory (like Atlantic sea kelp) will help reduce the impacts, while providing rich and nutritious mineral content.
3. Go natural and avoid chemicals that are absorbed through your pores and trap heat under the surface
Thicker, synthetic creams can be full of chemicals, preservatives, and artificial scents / colours. All of these factors can create a barrier, preventing the skin’s pores from breathing and trapping the heat under the surface, worsening any burns or inflammation. Stick to natural oils and go light.
Last but not least, focusing on properly hydrating the body and replenishing water levels will not only help your body feel better, but look better as well. While in the sun your body sweats, and pulls water from the surface of the skin. You want to replenish these levels to stay balanced.

At this point, we’re all aware that improperly-disposed, and dense non-recyclable plastic is filling our oceans, our landfills, and our lives.
This year, we’ve been making steps to help reduce our use of non-recyclable plastics & energy both in our manufacturing processes, as well as in our packaging.
However, our efforts have also been in educating conscious consumers on more sustainable alternatives, and what harm some commercial products can cause their skin, and to the environment. The easiest swap most of us can make, is embracing good old-fashioned bar soap.
So, why is bar soap a more environmentally conscious option…
At Nova Scotia Fisherman, our staff all keep one bar in the shower, one bar on the bathroom counter, one by the sink in the kitchen, and a few small bars for travel & guests. In most all cases, they replace synthetic liquid soap in plastic bottles, that we would use for these purposes. They even lend a hand scrubbing stains from a shirt, lathering up a dish brush when out of dish soap, or lathering up in a washcloth to wipe down the counter in a pinch.
Our sea kelp soaps are safe for all skin types, and are made using only natural ingredients and a cold-process method - This means they last long, don’t contain any additives or chemicals, and are safe for hands, face, body, and hair (both humans and animals).
Switching to bar soaps is possibly the easiest way you can positively impact your footprint by reducing unnecessary chemicals, additives, and plastics.
If you do a search, you’ll be able to find soaps that have zero packaging, or come in paper packaging that is recycle friendly. However, watch out for paper packaging that is plastic-lined, or waxy, and therefore not recyclable! (quite common).
This summer, we’re (Nova Scotia Fisherman) moving to 100% paper packages for our soap bars, that are completely recyclable / compostable. This allows us to protect the premium bars as they head to stores or your home, while helping to reduce the environmental footprint.
Replacing plastic from liquid hand soaps, facial cleansers, shampoos, and body washes for an entire year adds up fast. Switching to bar soaps is an easy way to get started, and set a habit of being more conscious day-to-day.
Our bar soaps are made using the traditional, cold process method, where no heat is applied to the oil base, or during the curing process which helps maintain nutritional and nourishing power for your skin.
Once the soap has cured, it doesn’t really go bad. We have to give each product a shelf life, however due to any lack of chemical compounds that break down and erode over time, each bar will remain fresh and dense for a long period of time.
As the bar loses moisture content, the lather it produces becomes thicker. We cure each bar 6-8 weeks prior to it hitting shelves or arriving at your doorstep. This helps speed up the curing process and you receive a bar that will last, create a luxurious lather, and leaves little footprint on the planet.
Bar soaps, on average, require about one-fifth the energy to manufacture liquid soaps and detergents.
Commercial liquid body washes are made with synthetic detergents, fragrances, and preservatives that provide no benefits to our bodies and are harmful to the environment. Many of these compounds add to the shelf life of the product as preservatives, artificial scents & colours, as well as lathering agents.
In 2015, there was an interesting study conducted by Zurich’s Institute of Environmental Engineering. Scientists assessed three categories of cleaners: laundry detergent, body soap, and surface cleaners.
The goal was a first-ever life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) of these types of products. An LCIA takes into account the environmental cost across the product’s lifetime:
Manufacturing
Transport & Storage
Use
Disposal
The scientists used industry data, customer behavior studies, and information from the ecoinvent database on product lifecycle information. In some cases they had to contact the manufacturers themselves.
The scientists found that based on consumer studies, in a one-time, 30-second hand wash, people used .35g of bar soap, and 2.3g of liquid soap. It takes more than six times the amount of liquid soap to accomplish the same task. It’s like the difference between driving to work in a Chevy Volt or a Ford Expedition. You get to the same place, but you use a lot more gas to do it.
If 6x more of a product is needed to do the same task, then that’s 6x the raw materials to manufacture it, 6x the space in the truck needed to transport it, 6x the shelf space in the heated store to present it to consumers.
The scientists found that liquid soap has 10x the carbon footprint of bar soap. Two major culprits here: The chemicals that are used to manufacture liquid soap, and the fact that the soap is packaged in wasteful plastic.
In storage and transport, liquid soap isn’t packaged very efficiently—while bar soap is packaged in stackable bars. All those little bits of wasted space in the boxes and shelves adds up.
Finally, the chemicals used in liquid soap require far more wastewater treatment than those used in bar soap. And the plastic containers liquid soap comes in are often incinerated, if not disposed of properly, or if the plastic compound isn’t easily recycled.
Just as a body wash, bar soaps made from nourishing natural oils are moisturizing your skin, repairing, and strengthening, while at the same time cleansing and removing dirt. Commercial liquid body washes are manufactured to run from your skin after cleansing, while bar soaps allow the natural oils to replenish the skin’s moisture levels while you’re cleaning.
Skincare expert Jennifer Rock, founder of the Skin Nerd online consultancy - “People spend a lot of time and money researching cleansers and moisturizers for the face, but then jump into the shower and use anything. As a result, our body’s skin is woefully neglected”. She says one of the most common pictures they’re sent on Instagram is of acne on body parts. “It’s such a common problem.”
Her first tip is to think about your body as much as you do your face, both in terms of routine and product. Second, her most salient tip is to read the label carefully. "Look for aloe, coconut, olive, castor and glycerine. You don’t want anything too heavily scented or colourful: synthetic dyes are irritating."
“If you consistently need to moisturize after you have washed, you are probably not using the right soap: Invest in a better one, and you can probably cut back on the everyday cream for full body.”
So, now that you know a bit about the differences, we dare you to give it a try and see if you miss your liquid soaps! Save 15% on any sea kelp soap bar + soap dock using code “SKIPTHEBOTTLE” at checkout.
PRO TIP for converting friends & family - Choose a slatted soap dish like our Soap Dock.. Water pools in soap dishes that don’t offer it a place to drain, which decreases the lifespan of the bar and makes things a bit slimy!

]]>Although it’s nice to break routine and have some much-needed R&R, our skin unfortunately takes no days off. While we’re relaxing, our skin is still doing it’s job (and under more summer-related stress).
It’s important to take small steps to help your skin remain healthy, nourished, and clear while you travel the globe, camp for the weekend, or take that much-needed staycation.
Here are our rules for keeping your skin happy, healthy, and strong while on the go:
]]>Summer is vacation time! If you’re like most of us, you enjoy kicking back with friends, family, exploring new places and taking in some sun.
Although it’s nice to break routine and have some much-needed R&R, our skin unfortunately takes no days off.
No one loves a heavy packer. When you’re on the go you want to be nimble, and the last thing you want is to be carrying around your bathroom in a backpack.
In general you want:
These four pillars will get you through all climates and keep your skin nourished + resilient against changing conditions. They should be your must-haves in a travel pack.
The most simple way to keep our skin nourished, looking young + healthy… moisturizing! There are three times during the day your skin needs a “kelping” hand..
Applying a natural moisturizer at these times throughout the day ensures your skin doesn’t dry out, receives the nourishment and oils it requires to help support elasticity, and our sea kelp extract helps to reduce redness, inflammation, and all the goodness that can come with seasonal allergies + being outdoors.
A big part in preventing skin irritation and breakouts is removing dead skin, dirt, and excess oils from the skins surface. Some liquid body washes have trouble with exfoliation, and also contain strong chemicals like detergents that can dry out your skin (and seep into your pores).
Switching to a natural soap bar has many benefits:
Our lips are exposed to the air and elements 24-7. Humidity, sun, salt water, dry air plane cabins.. These can all impact how your lips retain moisture, retain a healthy colour, and feel to your partner (smooch).
Applying a natural balm with beeswax helps create a barrier that prevents most of these issues, without using added chemicals or fillers.
Apply as you would a moisturizer (3 times per day), and keep one in your car/pocket/bag for on the go (See our sea kelp lip balm double packs).
We all know the importance of being cautious to sun exposure. SPF and reducing exposure is key to preventing skin damage from too many rays. But what about after you’re out of the sun? The few hours after sun exposure is a sensitive time for your skin as it adjusts and tones from vitamin d. Moisturizing during this period ensures the skin receives new oil content to replenish, essential vitamins + minerals, and helps reduce the appearance of burns by toning.
Always look for natural moisturizers without artificial chemicals, parabens, and other fillers as your skin will absorb any topical very quickly, and you want to provide the best nutrients.
This has less to do with products as it does with routine! Sleep is essential for us, we know that. But more importantly, proper sleep is essential for healthy looking skin. A good nights sleep can help prevent bags under the eyes, induce proper collagen production, and maintain hydration levels in the body.
Tip - place a natural moisturizing cream under your eyes before bed, and it will help prevent inflammation and puffiness in the morning (See our bayberry & sea fennell moisturizer).
Our last, but most important rule goes without saying - If you want healthy skin, you need to keep your body properly hydrated. Topicals and nutrient dense moisturizers will only help so much if your body is dehydrated from the inside-out.
Drink water throughout the day and drink a glass first thing in the morning to help prevent dehydration and keep your skin looking toned, healthy, and glowing.
Remember - caffein and salt water swimming both have negative impacts on our hydration levels. Up the water intake after that morning Joe or morning surf!
Beer and soap.. Two items you normally wouldn't pair (on purpose). Typically, soap might follow beer, and involve a spill.
Turns out that beer actually contains many nourishing elements, beneficial for maintaining balanced, clear skin. Go figure.
The value for our skin is found in the break down of the hops. Essentially, beer has two major benefits for our skin:
1) Amino Acids / Vitamins / Mineral support
2) Yeast
Hops contain lots of skin softening amino acids, which can soothe irritated and inflamed skin (ex: during a shave, change of weather temperature, after sports / physical activity). So, these skin softening amino acids help reduce inflammation and red spots you may typically get from shower gels or other products.
Beer also contains vitamin B and other essential minerals that support collagen production and skin health. Collagen protein keeps our skin looking strong, resilient, and healthy. Any opportunity we have to nourish the skin with natural vitamin and mineral content is worthwhile. It's the foundation of what our skin craves to stay young and healthy.
The brewer’s yeast in beer acts as an antibacterial agent, great for combating acne, psoriasis, or other skin conditions brought on by build up of oils. Similar to apple cider, the slight acidity and reaction with the skin helps remove dirt, clean the skin, and prevent build up of bacteria.
Beer creates a rich lather that is perfect for cleansing, shaving, and shampooing. One bar with no plastic containers, and is safe for all skin types. Beer bar lather is foamy, fast, and captures natural aroma beautifully.
Beer soap itself, without added natural oils, smells spicy, herbal, and grassy. It's a great base of which to add natural ingredients and create a strong scent that lasts on the skin for hours.
Beer is a local ingredient, that yields close to home for most of us in North America. Most communities have craft options of import from Hops across the country, and support organic farming practices through certification and badging. So it's a way to support our local economy, support a local product, our farmers, brewers, and families.
We love beer in Nova Scotia. It's no secret. And although we have some strong brands that have been alive and well within the province for centuries, a fresh agricultural scene has more recently brought microbreweries and hop growers to our cities and towns.
We partnered with a small brewery doing just that. Brewing their own beer just minutes drive from our headquarters in the beautiful Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia (Port Williams), Sea Level Brewing make small batch brews with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
In our beer bar, we started with our best selling bar recipe - our simple sea salt sea kelp soap bar. Everything your skin needs, all natural.
We then infused Sea Level Pale Ale into our natural oil base, by hand and without added heat. This base is then infused with our sea kelp extract and natural scent of spearmint oil, grapefruit oil and black peppercorn.
Each bar is then cut by hand and cured for 4-8 weeks. This process ensures a solid, long lasting bar with very rich lather, sealing in a subtle natural scent.
Of our tests, Beer Soap is amazing for 3 use cases:
1) Shaving - Wether it's your face, legs, or body, this bar lathers quickly, lasts long, and cleanses while providing moisture relief.
2) Cleansing and acne prevention - Face, hands, and body. One bar to clean it all and helps to prevent dirt build up that leads to breakouts.
3) Shampoo - If you're looking for a natural alternative to detergent shampoos, Beer Soap leaves your hair feeling soft, smelling clean, and looking shiny. Cost effective and all natural.
Our Beer Bar is available online right now and in stores beginning this August. For a full list of stores click here
1) Great Gift for Beer Lovers - Sure, it's a great gift for just about anyone who enjoys a good beer. But it's also a great gift for those who enjoy new scents, artisan goods, locally-crafted Canadian goods, and supporting their beer loving friends.
2) Natural, powerful, quality ingredient - Hops are a natural, powerful ingredient that can be grown locally, with skin benefits! Why wouldn't we try to utilize it's benefits?
3) Smells great - Beer naturally has a spicy, earthy, grassy scent to it. Perfect for laying citrus fruits, spices, and herb oils. It also lasts, unlike most synthetic fragrances.
4) Multi-use (Shower, Shampoo, Shave) - Beer infuses well with other natural oils, offering soaps an additional layer of lather and foam. Perfect as an all body bar, or a shave bar, the added lather makes this a long-lasting bar that can do it all. Can replace your shampoo, body wash, hand soap and shaving cream.
5) Made in Canada - A true Canadian ingredient. We use Canadian hops and Canadian beer from right here in Nova Scotia.

]]>Seaweed (kelp) is a nutrient-rich, ocean plant found all over the world. Each type dwelling from different geographic areas, water temperatures, and ecosystems yield different health benefits, both for skin and body.
In Canada, we have some of the richest ocean plant marine ecosystems in the world. The North Atlantic Coast of Canada is famous for its icy, clean waters that are continuously replenished by the world's highest tides which average 14 feet or 4.25 meters from high to low tide. Our pristine shorelines are covered in all types of rich, marine plants that can be used to help treat a variety of ailments and conditions.
Nova Scotia Fisherman products are infused with a type of sea kelp plant called Fucus Vesiculosus. This dark, nutrient-rich seaweed is found in cold shallow waters around Nova Scotia. Traditionally used as a treatment for thyroid due to the plants' rich iodine content, Fucus has more recently been recognized for its many benefits to our skin.
Fucus is rich in magnesium, protein, fucoidan, retinol, and many vitamins / minerals (specifically vitamin a and c).
"Research findings associate various potential health benefits to Fucus that may help in treatment of atherosclerosis and immunity. It has also been reported to be of high potential use as an antioxidant, in estrogen-related cancer treatment and act as an anti-aging agent by improving skin elasticity and softness."
- Acadian Sea Plus, Nova Scotia 2019
Recently, skincare benefits have been linked with its antioxidant numbers and detoxification. Fucus kelps' high mineral content can act as a shield against damaging environmental agents, boost skin’s natural defence system, and help get rid of toxins.
The extract is also known for its reduction impact on inflammation (both when ingested and applied topically). Topically, the plant can help reduce redness and scarring from conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and excessive dry skin.
High mineral moisturization, detoxification, and reduced inflammation - this is the winning combination for slowing the aging process of our skin.
Our kelp is harvested from the southern tip of Nova Scotia, near Yarmouth or Pubnico shore. These shores are pristine, largely unpopulated, and full of rich ecosystems of Atlantic marine life.
Our harvesters, Acadian Sea Plus, work with local fisherman in the off season to train as sustainable ocean plant harvesters. The organization is a fully-integrated, biotech company that is responsible for every stage - from the sustainable harvesting and cultivation of marine plants, applied and fundamental research, technology development and engineering, to manufacturing and quality assurance.
The harvest and processing is both Pro-Cert and USDA organic certified.
Sustainability and quality are at the core of the cultivation process. The kelp is cut by hand using specifically designed ocean rakes. This prevents the plant from being cut at the root, keeps the ocean bed unaffected, and assures only the top portions of the plant are cut. This process also helps with growing a rich ocean forest - think mowing your lawn.
In any season, only 25% of forests are available for harvest. This prevents over-cultivation and any chance of disturbing marine life. The cultivation areas are monitored by both Acadian Sea Plus and the Government of Canada to assure these areas remain environmentally rich and unaffected.
After a short trip, the kelp is brought to shore and set to dry. The kelp is dried naturally in the open, using only the sun and fresh air, as to not impact its nutritional content and colour.
Once dried, the kelp is then processed into a fine powder using no additives or artificial preservatives, where we (Nova Scotia Fisherman) receive the raw, organic super plant.
The raw, organic powder is mixed into a natural oil base that can consist of coconut, olive, castor, shea or RSPO palm.
The powder extract is untreated and avoids contact with heat to retain its strength and nutritional content. We choose not to use artificial colouring in our products, displaying the rich green hue from the ocean plant in our balms.

In 2018 we (Nova Scotia Fisherman) attended the large Outdoor Retailers trade show in Denver, Colorado. This specific trade show helps showcase companies all over North America who offer products and services related to the great outdoors.
When we attend trade shows, we never know what to expect. Will we see existing customers? Will there be interest in our brand? Will we meet new buyers and form new relationships? The unknowns are infinite and results are never immediate. A year later however, we are reminded that good things are worth the wait.
On the Denver trade show floor, we had the pleasure of meeting the team from Nomadics Japan. With a hand shake and the standard mutual exchange of our “elevator pitch” we learned quickly we had a lot in common. We are both small, honest, hardworking, with an appreciation for nature and a passion to provide our customers with quality product; our values were mutual.
"Our (Nova Scotia Fisherman) pillars in the last 5 years have always remained the same - be transparent, be honest, support local, provide opportunity and be confident in every product we send out the door. We look for these same traits in suppliers, wholesalers, and organizations we partner with."
A year later and we are officially in business! We are proud to announce that Nova Scotia Fisherman Products are heading to Japan, and will be represented by the team at Nomadics.
Japan has a thriving skincare industry, and are no strangers to sea kelp benefits. They are the largest consumers of seaweed products, per capita, in the world. Nova Scotian kelp is especially coveted for both its nutrient density, as well as its sustainable harvesting regulations.
The team at Nomadics are a growing Japanese distribution company with roots in the outdoors. They only represent products that they have tested and use themselves, in a variety of extreme conditions.
Hideyuki and Takashi, two gentlemen from Nomadics, test the products in a variety of outdoor scenarios (surfing, hiking, skiing, climbing, rafting and more). They provide feedback to the team, which helps narrow down products that are effective and true to their claims.
We were proud to hear Nova Scotia Fisherman products passed the tests. Hideyuki and Takashi have a store front in Japan called Moonlight Gear, where they personally sell the products they test. They contribute with a follow up of blog posts on their experience and recommendations for outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the owners of Nomadics, Jeff Jensen, is originally from Alberta, Canada. Moving to Japan 25 years ago, he was happy to find our products as a connection to back home. Jeff is a philanthropist who started a non for profit called Mirai no Mori - aiming to empower marginalized youth in the great outdoors of Japan. Through hiking, boxing, outdoor cooking, wood crafting, rafting and more, the org has provided this opportunity for over one thousand deserving children in Japan.

This June, it was our pleasure to host Jeff, Hideyuki and Aki in Nova Scotia. Their team were very interested in the cultivation process and sustainable harvesting practices of our sea kelp here in Atlantic Canada.
We travelled to Acadian Sea Plants on the Southern tip of Nova Scotia (Yarmouth), where we joined the cultivation teams on the water to observe how the kelp is harvested by hand.
The kelp harvest is a sustainable, efficient, scientific and controlled process. Every decision made is for the benefit of the product and for the protection of the marine lands. All completed by hand, the harvester will cut the kelp from the ocean floor using a long, sharp rake - as to not pull it from the root, which ultimately encourages healthy re-growth (think of fresh cut grass).
The harvesters closely monitor the kelp’s density and will only ever harvest 25% of its capacity at a time. This is both monitored by the cultivators, as well as environment / fisheries Canada to maintain sustainability and a thriving ecosystem for marine life. The sea kelp will then be spread to dry naturally, using only the sun and air.
These regulations and processes are rare, situating Nova Scotia at the forefront of sustainable, natural cultivation. No farms and no synthetic additives to improve yield - only nature taking care of the process.
Aligning our passions for the outdoors, healthy skin, and clean products has been a simple process with this team and we look forward to bringing a little piece of the Atlantic to Japan!

When added as an ingredient in cold-process soaps, it's an amazing alternative to synthetic facial cleansers, body washes, and yes, even shampoos.
There are essentially 4 compounds in Goats Milk that make it a powerful agent for creating & maintaining healthy skin:
]]>When it comes to treating (and cleansing) your skin naturally, Goats Milk is a natural, very powerful ingredient that packs a lot of benefits.
When added as an ingredient in cold-process soaps, it's an amazing alternative to synthetic facial cleansers, body washes, and yes, even shampoos.
We source 100% Canadian goats milk to use in our handcrafted bars. Each premium soap bar is made by hand, and cured for 6 weeks. This allows the natural oils to settle and become dense - helping with longevity of the bar and creating a rich lather (a little goes a long way).
We take it a step further, by infusing raw, organic, sustainably-harvested sea kelp from the Atlantic in every bar. Sea kelp is a very powerful skin care tool for moisture content, reducing redness and inflammation, while being packed full of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients essential to building strong, healthy skin.
1) Cream - Natural fat helps boost moisturizing therapy for dry skin from the winter months.
2) Alpha hydroxy acids - Helps remove dead skin cells and clear pores. Leaving smoother, younger looking skin.
3) Vitamin A - Repairs skin tissues, helps reduce appearance of wrinkles, and offers irritation relief.
4) Selenium - Helps prevent excess skin damage from sun exposure.
1) Cleanse, Nourish, Moisturize & Protect.
As a moisturizing compound, it achieves all of these factors at once. Which is why it's such a powerful, natural, nourishing ingredient that's been used across the globe. It will not only help to clean your skin, but also provide nourishment, and repair any damage that's occurred. Goat's Milk is a top natural solution.
2) Keeps skin soft, preventing dry patches and flare ups
For those of us with sensitive skin, diagnosed conditions, or issues with dry skin - Goat's Milk is an amazing natural moisturizer, while also reducing inflammation (the culprit for typical irritation). By providing a strong, soft base for moisture, your skin will look and feel healthier.
3) Can help prevent premature aging signs
We all want to help turn back, or slow down the clock. Although we can't actually turn back time, we can be pro-active and seek-out products that benefit the longevity of our skin. By avoiding cheaper, synthetic skin care products, your skin is benefits from nourishing properties, rather than stripping the natural oils and exposing to chemical compounds. This all equates to healthier, younger-looking skin.
4) Reduced chance of break outs from acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis
Goat's Milk can help maintain PH balance, which helps skin repair faster. The name of the game here is 1) Reduce inflammation 2) Cleanse / clear pores 3) Moisturize and provide mineral content. Over time, it can have a significant impact on reducing the symptoms of many irritating skin conditions.
Our natural soap bar with Canadian goats milk is available now in Canada and the USA, with Free Shipping over $50. Only at NovaScotiaFisherman.com

Luckily, there are simple (and affordable) solutions that can naturally help prevent flare ups, break outs, and irritation.
]]>The changing seasons - sensitive skin’s friend or enemy. Changes in humidity, temperature, sun exposure, and wind can have a significant impact on your body’s biggest organ - your skin. For those of us with sensitive skin, or who suffer from a condition like rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis, preventing skin care issues during seasonal changes can be difficult.
Spring air brings an increase in humidity. Our skin tends to hold more water in the spring, which can be great for those with naturally dry skin. However, with increased humidity, comes increased sebum secretion, oil on the surface of the skin, and perspiration. Not only can this lead to clogged pores but it also attracts dirt, pollution, and bacteria to gather on the surface of the skin.
Luckily, there are simple (and affordable) solutions that can naturally help prevent flare ups, break outs, and irritation.
Exfoliation is key during Spring. Since cold weather and dry air may have caused build up of skin cells during the winter, exfoliating to remove these dead cells is very important, as they can clog pores + trap oils and dirt. But, beware of what products you use to exfoliate.
You want to choose a product with natural, healing compounds to prevent further irritation. Look for a natural scrub without added chemicals. Sea salt, sugar, and coffee are great compounds, and some natural oils can help sooth the skin at the same time (see our Salt N Sea scrub with virgin sea buckthorn oil and sea kelp for anti-inflammation).
Because our skin tends to hold more water in the spring, it’s always a great idea to asses your skins’ relationship with moisturizers. If you have large pores, sensitive skin, or suffer from a skin condition, thick moisturizers can exacerbate the negative effects by clogging pores and preventing the skin from breathing.
Look for a lighter moisturizing cream, lotion, or serum that is fast absorbing and free from added chemical preservatives (parabens/pthlatates). (see our Sea Kelp moisturizing cream)
Vitamin C is an anti-aging friend for your healthy skin. It helps in the production of collagen (stress and age can strip this from our skin), and can act a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants on the skin can help reduce everything from wrinkles to the redness brought on from rosacea. Seabuckthorn oil is one of the world’s most potent natural sources of Vitamin C (see our Seabuckthorn & Shea sea kelp soap, Seabuckthorn & Shea moisturizing cream).
Swapping your daily skincare products for all natural options can have a profound effect on how our skin looks and feels. Your skin is porous and will absorb what it comes into contact with. Many of the less expensive and more accessible products contain chemicals that provide little to no benefit for the skin (preservatives, lathering agents, synthetic fragrance, etc.). These compounds are not only harmful for the skin, but also for the planet as they travel down the drain.
Lack of hydration can be culprit of many common skincare issues. As humidity and temp goes up, so does your body’s water consumption. It’s important to up your water intake to at least 2-2.5 litres every day. It’s the most simple (and inexpensive) way to keep your body feeling, and looking great.
We also can’t forget about our food. Have you ever heard “You are what you eat”, well it’s true. Our food is our fuel. It’s how our body’s gain nutrients and grow. Our skin can tell us a lot about our diets. Filling up on vegetables, fruits, fibre, + clean protein can help provide the building blocks for amazing skin. Avoiding processed / added sugars, excess dairy, and large amounts of saturated fats can have a profound impact on our health and on our appearance.
After you’ve had months of covering up, being indoors, and receiving a lack of vitamin D, it can be tempting to bask in the sun as much as possible when spring time hits. Spring is also when lots of outdoor enthusiasts experience burns and sun damage. Taking steps like using SPF, wearing hats when outdoors, and limiting direct skin exposure to troubled areas, can have a big impact.
Even natural compounds like coconut oil, have an SPF of around 5. Which is ok for daily wear, but when the sun is out and you want to be in it, it’s best to up the SPF and prevent damage (and pre-mature aging).
Cuts, scrapes, rashes, burns, and scabs … Ahh the joy of heading outdoors in the spring! All joking aside, outdoor enthusiasts understand that the beautiful environment and the elements can have an impact on your skin.
If you have skin sensitivity, or any existing condition, a natural balm with healing compounds can be a life safer (like our Rescue Balm). Stick some in your pack next time you’re out on an adventure. A natural balm with healing properties can be used as a moisturizer, as a natural anti-septic for cuts/scratches, and to reduce itchiness / irritation from bug bites. or allergies.
Just like the rest of the year, spring brings it’s own skin care challenges. Wether you’re on the trail, at the beach, or next to the pool - step up to the plate and be prepared, naturally.
]]>
In these cases, you can only be prepared and deal with what comes. However, in the long run, we do have the opportunity to plan for the seasons and the impacts the changing weather will have on our body’s biggest organ, our skin.
]]>Canada - a vast, beautiful place full of diverse people, wildlife, ecosystems, and.. changing weather patterns.
Depending on where you are in Canada, one could experience snow, hale, rain, sun, high winds, and freezing temperatures (all in the same day). On the Atlantic coast, the temperatures can change significantly, sometimes in only a matter of hours.
In these cases, you can only be prepared and deal with what comes. However, in the long run, we do have the opportunity to plan for the seasons and the impacts the changing weather will have on our body’s biggest organ, our skin.
Oil & Sebum Secretion - When the temperature increases, the natural oils secreted by your skin become active and thin. The oils will tend to gather in the pores, and without proper exfoliation or cleansing, can lead to skin irritation like acne or breakouts. Also humidity causes excessive sebum secretion = oily skin. Think spring on the Atlantic, or winter in BC. This can act as a magnet for dirt and pollutants, sticking to your skin and trapping within your pores. To prevent acne causing bacteria it’s important to exfoliate, remove the dirt from the pores, and cleanse gently.
In the opposite scenario, a cold and dry climate, the lack of moisture in the air causes your skin to dry out, increasing the appearance of wrinkles (pre-mature aging) and chance of irritation / flaking. The oils secreted from your skin tend to dry out, or become more solid, clogging pores.
Dry skin buildup - During the winter, many people find their skin becomes cracked, itchy, tight, and red. If the climate is dry, your skin will naturally become dry too, causing dull, flaky skin. Dead skin cells can accumulate on the surface and act as a barrier, preventing oils to transfer, and from moisturizers to enter and perform their job. ie - that amazing sea kelp moisturizer or serum you just purchased won’t get a chance to reach your pores. When the air around you is drier, be sure to exfoliate and cleanse regularly.
During colder, dry weather (fall/winter):
During warmer, humid weather (spring/summer):
Simple tips that will make a big difference in how your skin looks and feels. Choosing the right products, avoiding harsh chemicals, and being pro-active can help retain your skin’s health in any climate/season.

This past weekend our crew attended the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California. The Natural Products expo is a large exhibition at Expo West, where many new, innovative companies in the health & wellness industries share their products, services, and ideas. This year saw 86,000 attendees from 136 countries.
For a small Nova Scotian company, it was a great opportunity to see what consumers are asking for, and what new products are being created all over the world. It's quite rare to have so many naturally-focused companies under one roof, so in addition to hearing of new products/services, it's also a learning opportunity. The expo brings many specialists, physicians, experts, and influencers together to discuss new trends in the natural space, and how the industry can continue to serve its customers.
Our team met with many partners from the US, and discussed why Nova Scotia Kelp, when applied topically, has such a strong anti-inflammation benefit for the skin. Many attendees were hearing of our beautiful province for the first time, others had experienced the maritime charm and conversation flew easy.
Even morning yoga sponsored by Stash Teas!
This year, we're on a mission to reduce plastic use and consumption - both in our products, our manufacturing, and also in our team's own personal lives. It's become such an apparent issue, and unfortunately so much ends up in the oceans. The same oceans which yield so much life and so much powerful, natural kelp! We met with many companies, large and small, who are on the same mission. It was inspiring and encouraging.
We also tested some new product ideas, including new natural shave bars and a natural pet bar / shampoo cleanser. Needless to say they were a hit, and our sales manager Tassi found some new friends.
Natural Products Expo was an amazing learning opportunity for our small company, as we continue to produce the cleanest, most effective skin care we can. We have an exciting year ahead at NS Fisherman and now back home (and back to work!).

Palm oil has received lots of criticism and discussion, mostly based on production methods in certain parts of the world and the environmental impacts associated. It is devastating and deeply concerning.
We should first say that we believe unethical palm oil production is a significant problem and is not at all what we stand for as a company. When harvested correctly, palm oil is a powerful, natural, wonderful ingredient that many communities rely on for income.
Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of certain palm trees, especially the West African oil palm. Palm oil is used in cosmetic products, as a cooking oil, and also to produce bio-fuels for heat and transportation.
85% of all palm oil comes from Indonesia and Malaysia, where thick rainforests provide life and shelter to a wide variety of species. Parts of these rainforests are harvested and replaced with palm oil farms.
When this process is completed without regulation and sustainability practices enforced, it can wipe out food and shelter for animals, making it difficult for many species to live and survive. These unethical producers burn the vegetation on the land, which wipes out all food sources for animals and produces great amounts of CO2 gas into the atmosphere.
Under 10% of all palm oil producers in Borneo produce certified sustainable palm oil.
RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) is a not-for-profit that unites stakeholders from the 7 sectors of the palm oil industry: oil palm producers, processors or traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks/investors, and environmental and social non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.
The RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). When they are properly applied, these criteria can help to minimize the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil-producing regions.
The RSPO has more than 3,000 members worldwide who represent all links along the palm oil supply chain. They have committed to produce, source and/or use sustainable palm oil certified by the RSPO.
We use sustainable palm oil in our soap bars (and only our soap bars) as a natural cleanser, moisturizer, and antioxidant. Because we choose not to use any harmful, artificial, chemicals or fillers, our soaps use natural oils to cleanse and remove dirt from the skin. The use of artificial chemicals and fillers in antibacterial soaps isn't commonly regulated and produces it's own harsh impacts not only on your skin, but also on the environment once it's washed down the drain.
At Nova Scotia Fisherman, we have always sourced from RSPO approved sources. This means that any producers, suppliers, or distributors have been verified as a sustainable, ethical palm oil facility, adhering to RSPO principles. Under these conditions, species are able to thrive and survive in their environment.
First, you SHOULD boycott unsustainable palm oil. Palm oil is an incredibly high-yielding vegetable oil, which means that any oil replacing it will have to use more land, which does not solve the issue of deforestation and associated land use change (more water, more power, more CO2 emissions). We believe it's better to get palm oil production ‘right’ and support organizations that work hard to ensure the practices are monitored and regulated.
Source sustainable. Utilize RSPO resources and only use ethically-sourced oils in your products.

The cold process method of soap making is the most natural way to produce soap. It requires fewer chemicals and additives than other methods, and the outcome is a higher-quality, dense, and longer-lasting bar.
]]>-
As more and more publications on the negative impacts from liquid, chemical, anti-bacterial soaps appear, those in search of chemical-free, healthy skincare are moving towards more natural soaps.
-
Natural soaps are for those who want a gentle cleanser, like the soft feeling on their skin, and want safe ingredients for their family to use.
Nova Scotia Fisherman natural, sea kelp soaps are all made using the cold process method.
The cold process method of soap making is the most natural way to produce soap. It requires fewer chemicals and additives than other methods, and the outcome is a higher-quality, dense, and longer-lasting bar.
To fully understand the benefit of cold processed soaps, we first have to touch on saponification (fun word, eh?).
Saponification is the chemical reaction between any fat (olive, coconut, castor oils, ethically sourced palm) and in our case, sodium hydroxide. This produces glycerol and a fatty acid salt, called soap! When sodium hydroxide is used, rather than potassium hydroxide, it produces a hard, higher quality soap - increasing the bar's longevity and "frothing" power.
Because no excess heat or chemicals are used, essentials oils and plant-based additives for skin benefits, or fragrance, don't break down and lose strength.
In Nova Scotia Fisherman soaps, we infuse many anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and fragrant ingredients such as:
Nova Scotia Sea Kelp, Organic Shea, Sweet Orange, Tangerine Oil, Ginger Root, Lemongrass, Seabuckthorn, Apple Cider, Cinnamon, Cardomon, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Lavender, Charcoal, Patchouli, Bayberry, among many others.
Once our bars are made, we then allow them to complete the saponification process and oxygenate in controlled temperature for 4-6 weeks. Each bar loses water during this time, making the bar denser. The harder the bar, the longer it will last.
-
Kelp is the large, brown algae you may have brushed up against swimming in the ocean. Among kelp's many health benefits when ingested, it is a mineral and nutrient dense anti-inflammatory for the skin (more about that in a bit).
Kelp is a large algae found in salt water. It can appear as green, brown, or red depending on the depths, and temperature of the water in which they live.
The largest sources of Kelp Forests are found in the Pacific Ocean, however, the Atlantic oceans' ice-cold waters produce rich, nutrient-packed kelp that is darker in color, and richer in minerals like iodine, magnesium, and iron.
The kelp we use is harvested by hand from cold, shallow, nutrient-rich saltwater close to the untouched shores of the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia (highest tidal range in the world). 200 billion tonnes flow in and out of the bay on a single tide... greater than the combined flow of all the rivers on Earth.
We use kelp in its purest form - raw, USDA organic, and unprocessed, so that the skin can absorb, and benefit from, all of its amazing properties.
Our kelp, or seaweed is dried using a low temperature passive solar drying method. This low impact drying process ensures that the marine plants are handled in a manner that preserves all of their valuable properties, without the salty, sea-scent. We then grind the dried kelp into a fine powder, which is optimal for applying it topically to the skin, and for exfoliating properties.
If managed with care, kelp / seaweed is a sustainable and rapidly renewable resource. All of the kelp we use is harvested responsibly by trained, experienced professionals to ensure the highest quality of kelp is harvested and that the procedure does no harm to the marine ecosystem.
Kelp's major benefits for skin come in its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Anti-oxidants are known to help protect your skin against UVA rays, Xtreme environments and daily pollution. Protecting your skin daily from external factors will help it maintain it's elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and keep it looking younger.
Anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness and irritation from the environment, dryness, and existing skin conditions prone to flares or breakouts (ex: eczema, psoriasis, acne).
Kelp is also a moisturizer. Its high mineral content helps the skin (and hair) retain moisture, reducing the impact of temperature changes and exposure to nature's elements.

Soap isn't all about nourishing the skin, but also about cleansing, removing dirt and killing bacteria. We're all exposed to germs and bacteria each day, which can impact our skins' ability to heal and put us at risk of getting sick.
Many think that harsh antibacterial soaps are required to kill germs and bacteria - but this isn't the case.
For years before commercial cosmetic and skincare companies started adding-in synthetic chemicals, soap for cleansing was made with natural oils and ingredients.
The CDC states that antibacterial soaps with added chemicals are no more effective than natural soaps for killing disease-causing germs. We also have healthy bacteria and oils on our skin. Using antibacterial soaps can kill these healthy bacteria and remove the natural oils, which causes damage and pre-mature aging through dryness.
However, antibacterial agents do have their place. In hospitals, vet clinics, homes with pets, and when allergies come into play, they can do a great job of neutralizing germs in a short period of time. But repeated skin exposure to these harsh chemicals puts your skin at risk of damage.
So without added chemicals, how does natural soap clean the skin?
The oils we use are naturally antibacterial. Olive oil and shea butter are known to be naturally anti-aging, helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots. Rich in vitamins A and E, these moisturizers protect the skin against environmental damage and help guard against UV radiation.
Coconut oil, meanwhile, is antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial, helping repel germs and bacteria responsible for breakouts and skin complaints like acne. It’s also deeply nourishing, helping soothe the symptoms of dry skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.
The Bottom Line
For everyday use, look for soaps that are made without any artificial fillers, chemicals, or artificial antibacterial agents like triclosan. These agents are very tough on the skin, tough on the drain, and studies suggest their effectiveness at killing bacteria over natural oils is inconclusive.
For instances on the go (ex: hand sanitizer for children, hospitals, clinics), antibacterial soaps and sanitizers can certainly serve their purpose!
Earlier this summer, our founder Les Falconer sat down with the fine folks over at Nova Box to discuss running a business in rural Nova Scotia, how Nova Scotia Fisherman began, and working with family.
Why is it important for you to be part of a family run company? "Honestly, I have worked with my family my entire life, I don't know it any other way. That being said, I can't necessarily say it's better or worse, but I can say that I can't imagine it any other way. Business and personal life have always been blended for me, but it's important for me to be able to provide jobs and opportunities to the people in my community and the people closest to me."
